This is book 4 of 4 in the Bishop Security Series.
It is important to note that each book can be read as a standalone. They have overlapping characters and are set in the same world but can easily be read separately. A freelance reporter is murdered in Philadelphia.
A tech billionaire is poisoned in a Tampa restaurant.
Are these seemingly random killings connected?
Former CIA officer Finn McIntyre is out of options. After being captured and tortured on a SEAL mission, he was left with a scarred face and a mountain of rage. Years of working undercover in a drug cartel have only augmented his ruthlessness and isolation. His best friends at Bishop Security have all but given up on him, and the one woman—the only woman—he has ever loved has let him go. Finn has to get his head straight or end up dead.
With no one to turn to and nowhere to go, Finn takes off and finds himself in the strange town of Purgatory, West Virginia. The whistlestop is haunted and entrancing, and soon Finn finds himself with a home rehab project, an older neighbor in need of his help, a judgmental wolf, and a loitering little boy. Purgatory is a town full of secrets, and Finn is determined to unravel them while exorcising his own demons.
Charlotte Devlin—Twitch to those who know her—fell in love with Finn seven years ago. Before he was captured, before he became an angry, heartless man, before he discarded her like a regrettable one-night stand. If she hadn’t welcomed him into her bed that final time, maybe she could forget about him. Unfortunately, the baby growing inside of her makes that impossible.
To make matters worse, Twitch can’t stop the constant anxious feeling that she is being watched. When it becomes clear that someone is trying to harm her—and that the suspect is much more than an obsessed stalker—Twitch is forced to turn to the one man who can help her uncover what is really going on and keep her safe.
Finn and Charlotte finally realize their love was meant to be, but can they stop a madman threatening to take it all away?
I found out that this was a book four. I reached out to the author to find out if the books need to be read in order. I wasn’t confident that I would be able to finish all four books before this blog. I was assured that I could read them all as standalone. I decided to read them all anyways. With some reluctance. I won’t lie. I read all four books in less than a week. I agree that they don’t have to be read in order. I do fully recommend it anyway. It enhances each story in my opinion. I knew I would love these books just by the covers. I didn’t realize how much until I dove in. I’ve already recommended this series to somebody I think will enjoy them very much. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series! Kind of wish that I had narration skills so I could offer to narrate these beauties so they could enter the audiobook world!

I’m known for being ruthless, lethal, and dangerously magnetic. I’m a shadow, the monster pirouetting in the dark. I’m feared yet loved by all, and the entire city surrenders to my name as I rule them with an iron fist.
People always look both ways before crossing me.
Until Bianca Romano turned my life into a storm with just a single glance.
She became mine to keep.
My beautiful temptation.
I broke my rules for her, but that doesn’t mean she can control me.
She’s staying, and she wants to play my game.
But I’ll show her exactly who’s in control.
They call him “The Raven.”
Legend has it that if you look at him, there’s no going back. But I bent my rules for him, and now I’m his, with no way out.
Corvo De La Rossi isn’t the monster he claims to be.
Because I know underneath that brutal exterior lies a lot of pain.
If he’s the monster, the beast in this fairytale, then I’m the beauty who will put back the broken, lost pieces of him-the one who will tame him.

One of the things readers love about the Fate of Eyrinthia series are the characters. There’s a huge cast in Eyrinthia, with people from four different kingdoms. Some are good, some are pure evil, and the rest are varied shades of gray. There are a lot of main characters, but we also have a lot of side characters–and they get a lot of love!
So, what does it take to make a strong side character?
Give them a quirk/defining personality trait. This won’t be the only thing about them, of course–that wouldn’t make a strong side character!–but especially if you have a large cast of characters, it can be a good idea to have something that helps them take shape. Venn was the “funny guy/best friend”; Vera was the “shy maid/kind confidante”. This helps them stand out for the readers, and it helped me know how to have them act in a scene without always having to reach deep and figure out all their motivations all the time. That would be exhausting!
Learn where they came from, and where they want to go. We all know that main characters need clear pasts and goals. If you want your secondary characters to also leap off the page, you need to know some things about them, too. It doesn’t need to be as fleshed out as your main characters, but by figuring out their history and dreams, you can know them better–and write them better. You may also be surprised at how that can shape subplots–or even the main plot.
Give them a worry or fear. It makes them more human, and more interesting. The dialogue will be better, and it could provide opportunities for the main characters to be supportive, which can make everything feel more real and fleshed out. Especially since it’s often the secondary characters that offer the main characters support and insights.
Allow them to change. Just because they’re a secondary character doesn’t mean they need to be static. In fact, giving them a story arc–or letting them have unexpected reactions–can lead to more engaging storytelling. Venn is the funny guy–until things get dangerous. Then he’s deadly. And when he loses Vera, he loses a lot of his humor. None of this overtook the main storyline, or necessitated him to become a POV in the main series–it was all in how the other characters saw him, and reacted to him.
Allow them to live ‘off-camera’. We’re following the main characters for a reason; most of their story happens ‘on-camera’, so to speak. We see the conversations, because they’re important to the plot. Side characters aren’t always on camera, and even if they are there, they’re often in the background. But if you recognize that they are doing things off-camera–having conversations, making connections, etc–then you can incorporate realistic changes in their relationships with other characters, as possibly bring in fun changes to the story. For instance, Venn and Vera have their first kiss off-camera–we see them flirt, and we learn they have a budding romance, just as we also learn that things go horribly wrong after Vera’s sister is killed. This, of course, is what helps set the stage for Shield & Blade.
There are many different ways to write rich, realistic characters. These tips provide just a few ideas, but they definitely helped me in Eyrinthia.
It’s been nearly a year since the Battle of Tearmann. With their last legitimate trade routes cut off, the fae increasingly rely on the Corps away teams to get essential supplies. Owen Williams, now a Corps member, has spent the last ten months running the border to get the haven what it needs to survive. But his last mission nearly killed him and his decision to join the corps threatened his fragile relationship with his family—a relationship that was already stressed to the breaking point by his son’s death.
But after Percill, a battleborn vampire, reveals the location of a group of the fae captives, the corps leadership makes it clear that there isn’t much they won’t do to rescue them. When Percill refuses to say more without a guarantee that Owen will be on the team that rescues them, Owen agrees even though going on this mission could shatter what’s left of his family. Success means he gets to retire a hero and go home to his family. However, failure wouldn’t just risk the captives, but could end with him held alongside them and separated from his family forever.
Ceril N Domace is an accountant, the owner of a cat with more zooms than brain cells, and a dedicated dungeon master.
As a lover of fiction works great and small, Ceril has been reading age-inappropriate stories since her father failed to pull The Silmarillion from her grubby little fingers at age five. As a grown-up accountant, her spreadsheet compiling gives her plenty of time to make plans for a fantastic world that isn’t plagued by balance sheets . . . and also has dragons.
On the rare occasions she manages to free herself from an ever-growing and complex web of TTRPG, Ceril enjoys taking walks and griping that all her hobbies are work in disguise.
I went into this blindly and wound up binge-reading both books in a short period of time. It’s so good. I didn’t want to put it down! I especially love the real-world issues that are subtly placed in the book. It gives you food for thought from a different angle. I will be rereading this series! Probably many times! I’m so glad that I discovered these books! I kind of wish I was a professional narrator so I can offer to narrate this book to turn both books into audiobooks!

Pulling back the layers of my struggles presented me with a multi-pronged issue that I needed to explore. There were times when what I toiled with was not fear itself. Instead, it was the life I knew that I could have if I would just let the fear go.
This truth would come to uncover a deeper layer to this phenomenon. What was I really afraid of? Well, the answer was twofold. It was the idea of being stuck with mediocracy because I was either (a) too afraid to let average go or (b) fearful of what it would feel like to embrace first-class. I was scared to lose and even more terrified to win. I wasn’t always frightened by the worst-case scenario. In some instances, the best possible outcome made me uneasy. It caused me to refuse to live a life beyond the proverbial wall of apprehensive excuses. It was the question on the opposite end of, what if I don’t get a better return spectrum. The double-edged sword that said, but what if I do. I remember years ago, talking to a friend after I completed a book project and saying, “What if I don’t do well with book interviews and selling this book?” Her response was, “What if you do?”
I normalized things not working out for me. So, could I respond appropriately if it did? Was I capable of walking in the win? Would true happiness cost more work and effort than I was willing to put in?
