1942- The ‘Manhattan Project’ commences, under the direction of US General Leslie Groves: its aim – to deliver an atomic bomb

1642- Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens discovers Martian south polar cap

1553- Spanish theologian and physician Michael Servetus arrested as a heretic in Geneva (put on trial the next day, eventually found guilty of heresy and burned to death)

1784- British parliament accepts East India Company Act 1784, bringing the East India Company’s rule in India under the control of the British Government.

1868- Earthquakes kill 25,000 & causes $300 million damages in Peru & Ecuador

1889- William Gray of Hartford, Connecticut patents the coin-operated telephone

1906- Black soldiers accused of raid Brownsville, Texas; despite support from local commanding officers, President Theodore Roosevelt orders dishonorable discharge for 167 soldiers; all were cleared of wrong-doing in 1972, 165 posthumously

1914- Carl Wickman begins Greyhound, the 1st US bus line, in Minnesota

1920- Flag designed by Marcus Garvey consisting of three horizontal stripes of red, black and green is adopted as the pan-African flag

1923- US Steel Corp initiates 8-hour work day

1932- Adolf Hitler refuses President von Hindenburg’s proposal to become vice-chancellor of Germany

1935- Roller derby is born when the Transcontinental Roller Derby begins at the Chicago Coliseum
