Writing Prompt: Canal and Spider

Sadie laced up her boots and grabbed her bag. This was going to be a very long day and she was going to need all the strength she could get. She walked out of her apartment into the cold empty hallway and locked up behind herself. She double-checked to make sure that nobody was lurking in any corners before making her way down the hallway and out the door of the building.

She would be meeting her lawyer on Canal street. She had a lot to discuss with him. The divorce. The charges against her. The settlement agreement. She could go on. She knew she had a temper. She will admit that she let it get the best of her when she caught the bastard with her sister. She should have known that her sister would press charges against her and exaggerate it to the point she’d be arrested.

She opened the door to her car and took a long breath. She could do this. She was strong. She was fierce. If she could walk away from everything she was walking away from, she could do this as well. She was just about to put her keys in the ignition when she saw it. There was a spider on the dashboard.

She shrieked and pulled herself out of the car. She was fiercely afraid of spiders. She was just thankful that she wasn’t on the road when she saw it. That would have been a very bad thing. Of course, Kathryn would probably be overjoyed to know that she was out of the picture. That was the kind of sister she was.

You should relax. You’re making a scene.

Sadie jolted to attention. She looked around to find herself alone in the parking lot. She knew she wouldn’t find anybody. The voice had come from her head. She couldn’t figure out her luck. She was already running late when she encountered the spider. Now she was going crazy on top of it all. The lawyer was just going to love to hear this. If he didn’t drop her, it would be a miracle.

Would you shut up? We don’t have time for your self-degrading crap right now. I’m sorry I had to come to you in the form of a spider, but it’s the only way I could be discreet. Now get back in the car.

She looked around her again before finally deciding to be brave and sit in the car. She started at the spider for what appeared to be an eternity. Eventually, she started to see that it didn’t look like a common spider. The eyes were knowing. It also had the brightest blue eyes and there was a purple star on its back.

Now that I have your attention. You can’t go meet your lawyer today. In fact, I fully recommend that you go straight into your apartment and immediately look for a new lawyer.

What? Why?

Because Clyde isn’t looking for your best interests. He’s being paid off by Dave and Kathryn to make sure that you go down hard for something that shouldn’t even be going to the courts.

I don’t understand.

They seem to be under the impression that you have just come into a lot of money. They want it. They will stop at nothing to take everything you have. Including killing you.

That’s insane. I didn’t come into money. If I did, I wouldn’t still be living here.

So you don’t know.

Know what?

Well, this is awkward. Your Aunt Veronica has passed away.

How the hell do you know that? Nobody has heard from her in years. The family turned her away because she chose to embrace her gift.

You didn’t turn her away.

Of course not. I loved her. She knew I had the gift, too. Wait…. You’re one of us, aren’t you?

You catch on quickly. Can we please go to the apartment now to talk more freely?

Yes.
