Thursday Quoteable: Special Edition for Complications of Pi

Thank you Lisa for hosting this great meme!

Welcome to Thursday Quotables! This feature is the place to highlight a great quote, line, or passage discovered during your reading each week.  Whether it’s something funny, startling, gut-wrenching, or just really beautifully written, Thursday Quotables is where my favorite lines will be, and you’re invited to join in!

Note: This will be a special edition because a good friend of mine’s book has a one year anniversary of her debut novel Complications of Pi. It has been one of the best books I have ever read and it’s stuck with me. I’ll probably reread it over and over again many times before it’s all said and done. I asked her to share her favorite quotes and I’m featuring them here.

Peyton wanted to die from humiliation and muttered to herself. “Graceful?” The next words she heard had her relaxing a bit.

“Never had anyone fall for me quite that fast before.”

“I’m just glad I didn’t stumble to the floor.” Peyton paused a moment and then continued over to the table, and with caution, pulled out the chair across from Nikola and eased down.

I actually love this one myself.

The only thing she could say positively was, as she lay upon the cold, hard ground in the position she landed in, as she heard people screaming and the sound of shoes rushing about, as she was certain this was how her life was going to end, at least she was dying on what she would consider a math day.

I feel like this should have a bit of a spoiler alert. It’s a nice quote though.

“So, who’s playing tonight at the bar? Do you know?”

“It is a local band called Dicks and Chicks.”

It was a good thing that Peyton wasn’t taking a drink at that moment, or she knew it would now be sprayed all over the interior of the car. “What!

“Liked that, did you? I was going to say Wieners and Buns, but it didn’t have quite the same roll off the tongue as the other.”

I love the banter between these two 🙂

“I’m good. Nothing to be worried about. Today is your day and all about you. Let’s get going so you can marry Willy Wonka. Does this mean I can start calling you Mrs. Wonka? Oh, wait. Mrs. Wonka who likes to play with the Tonka crane!”

Isn’t this just so innocent and silly? I love it!

If Peyton could, she would just take off and land in the stars. There she would be a bright star and find her place among all the other sad or tragic tales people spoke about from one generation to another.

This is deep.

Simone walked into the room looking at the carnage. “I believe it is Chalkboard – 1, Peyton – 0”.

“More like 17-0 today already, but who’s counting.”

I love this! It made for a great opening of the book!

“I am not looking for anyone right now, and they all have the “M” word on their mind.” He shuddered at the mention of that letter.

“Mustard, I can see why; it is kind of a wasted condiment. Or maybe monkeys? Manatees, oh wait! My favorite M word…Math. Yes, who could resist the wonderful world of mathematics and logic!”

It’s silly. I like it 🙂

With a huge sigh, Peyton gave in. “Fine. You win. Pie is a dessert that most people enjoy after dinner. It comes in a variety of flavors and textures. There are your fruit pies that are cooked down fruit with sugar and have a crust on the bottom and top usually. Some people get decorative with the top crust making beautiful designs out of it. It can also be made into a cobbler, which in my opinion, is just a big rectangular pie.”

Best. Deflection. Ever!

“Coward. Don’t you know the wolf will always come and get what it wants?”

Have the read the book to get more context 😉

“You heard me. You some magic carpet ride where everyone wants their turn?”
