Pawsitively Poisonous by Melissa Erin Jackson Book Review

Amber has lived in the small town of Edgehill all of her life. Everybody knows everybody and nothing stays a secret long. The town is very cat obsessed. Her shop, The Quirky Whisker fits right into that obsession. The only person who doesn’t seem to like or trust Amber is the chief of police who moved into town a couple of years ago. When a friend of Amber’s winds up murdered, she’s the first suspect. Especially since she’s the last person to have seen her alive.

I knew I’d love this book the moment my eyes caught the cover. I mean it’s so adorable. I just knew it would be one of those quirky and not so serious books. Other than the murder mystery, I was correct. I loved the small-town vibe where everybody knew everybody. I also loved the quirky and wit thrown through the entire book. I think some potential satire was missed through the book, but that’s just because I’m a naturally sarcastic person.

I found myself picturing this girl I watch on TikTok as Amber. I don’t really remember her name on the app. She’s just quirky and energetic and fun. She has long dark hair with some blue in it and she’s so full of energy. Amber reminded me of her so much. There was also a character in the book that reminded me of the girl Ariana Grande played in that one show. Don’t judge me. I’m bad at names. She was so adorable! The one criticism I had is that I wanted to see more interaction between the chief of police and Amber. Most of it was referenced and kind of rushed more than anything.

This book was narrated by Victoria Villarreal. Please do not ask me how to say that. I couldn’t even hear it properly the times it was mentioned in the audiobook. It’s a pretty name. I definitely feel for her. People probably constantly butcher her name. I digress. She did a pretty amazing job. I haven’t gotten a look to see who narrates the rest of the series, but I really hope she does. I am also curious to listen to other audiobooks narrated by her.

I really enjoyed this book. It had a great mystery without being pulled down with seriousness. It was quirky and light and fun. I couldn’t get enough of it. Amber was a great POV for this story. I’m looking forward to having the chance to read the rest of this series when I’m able to! I’m sure they will be just as great as the first one.
